Useful Information

ISC Erbil

SABIS® is an organization that manages schools worldwide. In the academic year 2008-2009, approximately 56,000 students were enrolled in SABIS® schools. The distinguishing mark of these schools is their implementation of the SABIS® Educational System. It is a system that offers a rigorous, internationally-oriented, college-preparatory curriculum for students aged 3 to 18+ focusing primarily on the core subjects of English, mathematics, sciences, and world languages.

The first school in what has grown to be the SABIS® School Network was the International School of Choueifat. It was founded in 1886 in the village of Choueifat, a suburb of Beirut, Lebanon. Currently, the SABIS® School Network consists of Member and Associate Member schools that operate in the private and public sectors worldwide. These schools all implement the SABIS® Educational System, although each one of them remains financially and administratively independent.

THE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF CHOUEIFAT – ERBIL opened for students in September 2006. Today, in its fifth year of operation and after adding one grade level every year, ISC-ERBIL welcomes students in KG1 through Grade 10. Offering a high-quality education to its students, ISC-Erbil is a member of the SABIS® School Network, which consists of schools in 15 countries and provides education to more than 64,000 students.

ISC-Erbil moved to a permanent campus in August 2008. The state-of-the-art campus, which can house up to 2,500 students, includes a semi-Olympic sized swimming pool, as well as modern classrooms, laboratories for the sciences and IT, a library, and staff accommodation.

Iraqi Central Government

Iraq is a parliamentary democracy with a federal system of government. The 2005 Iraqi constitution guarantees basic rights. The executive branch consists of the Presidency Council (one president, two vice presidents–an arrangement that may change following the March 2010 elections and the formation of a new government) and a Council of Ministers (one prime minister, two deputy prime ministers, and 37 cabinet ministers). The president is the head of state, protecting the constitution and representing the sovereignty and unity of the state, while the prime minister is the direct executive authority and commander in chief. The president and vice presidents are elected by the Council of Representatives. The prime minister is nominated by the largest bloc in the Council of Representatives. Upon designation, the prime minister names the members of his cabinet, the Council of Ministers, which is then approved by the Council of Representatives. The executive branch serves a 4-year term concurrent with that of the Council of Representatives.

Basra International Airport

The airport was built in the 1960s and then developed in the 1980s by the Iraqi Government department State Organisation for Roads and Bridges (SORB) as a gateway to the only port in Iraq. This second phase of development was completed by a joint venture comprising Strabag Bau AG of Cologne, Billfinger & Berger of Manheim both in Germany and Universale of Austria in Spring 1988. It is claimed that the airport was built only as a facility for VIPs and was only used rarely.

Renovation of the airport was supposed to proceed with the construction of a new terminal under German contract but the project prematurely ceased with the outbreak of the 1991 Gulf War. Actual development proceeded in the airport only after the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Some facilities were refurbished under a contract by United States Agency for International Development. The project is broad as it includes building air traffic control towers and other navigational facilities, as well as the construction of transportation and communications facilities.

The airport was eventually re-opened in June 2005. The event was marked by the traditional sheep sacrifice as an Iraqi Airways Boeing 727 jet landed from Baghdad. It was the beginning of a new domestic service in Iraq between Baghdad and Basrah. However, many of the passengers complained about the lack of basic facilities. Problems included air conditioning and toilets.

Baghdad Al Muthana Airport

Baghdad International Airport (IATA: SDA, ICAO: ORBI) (formerly Saddam International Airport, also known as Al Anbar Airport) is Iraq’s largest airport, located in a suburb about 16 km (10 miles) West of downtown Baghdad.

Before the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the airport was named Saddam International Airport after Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. Although the name was changed in the invasion’s wake, Baghdad retains its former IATA airport code of SDA (although some airlines use the code BGW). Its ICAO airport code was ORBS, but changed to ORBI in 2003. The airport and the surrounding military perimeter are referred to as BIAP (buy-op) by coalition civil and military authorities.

Baghdad Airport officially reverted to civilian control on August 25, 2004. Iraqi Airways and Royal Jordanian Airlines currently operate regular flights to Amman, Jordan, and FedEx and DHL operate civilian and military cargo services.
